Overview (Highlights) 

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and rewarding trails. This 8-day itinerary offers excellent acclimatization, stunning ecological diversity, and a high summit success rate. From the lush rainforest to sweeping moorlands, alpine deserts, and finally the icy summit zone, the Machame Route provides one of the most immersive Kilimanjaro experiences. Highlights include climbing the famous Barranco Wall, panoramic views of Mawenzi and Kibo, and reaching Africa’s highest point Uhuru Peak (5,895m)

 

Day-by-Day Itinerary 

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi 

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Spend the evening relaxing as your guide prepares you for the trek with a full briefing and equipment check. This first night allows you to rest and prepare mentally for the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Machame Gate → Machame Camp 

Your day begins with a short drive to Machame Gate for registration. The trek starts through the lush rainforest, ascending steadily along a winding trail until you reach Machame Camp (3,100m). This first day offers rich vegetation, birdlife, and forest wildlife. 

Accommodation Options: 

Day 3: Machame Camp → Shira Camp 

Depart Machame Camp and ascend through moorland terrain, crossing ridges and valleys. Vegetation becomes sparse as you approach higher altitudes, with beautiful views of Kibo Peak. Arrive at the expansive Shira Plateau, where you settle at Shira Camp (3,800m) for the night.

Day 4: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp 

Today is a full acclimatization day. Trek upward to the striking Lava Tower, also known as Shark’s Tooth, reaching 4,600m before descending to Barranco Camp (3,950m). This “climb high, sleep low” approach helps your body adjust while offering incredible views of glaciers and rugged valleys.

Day 5: Barranco Camp → Karanga Valley Camp 

Begin with the thrilling ascent of the Great Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical climb offering breathtaking views. Trek through ridges and cross the Karanga Valley before arriving at Karanga Camp (4,200m). This short hiking day is crucial for acclimatization. 

Accommodation Options: 

Day 6: Karanga Valley Camp → Barafu Camp 

Continue ascending toward the rocky high-altitude desert until reaching Barafu Camp (4,600m), the final base before the summit. Enjoy early dinner and rest as your summit push begins at midnight. The views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are spectacular from this altitude.

Accommodation Options: 

Day 7: Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Mweka Camp 

Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight. Ascend slowly through steep scree toward Stella Point, then proceed along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, descend back to Barafu for a warm meal before continuing down to Mweka Camp for overnight rest.

Accommodation Options: 

Day 8: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi/Arusha 

Enjoy a gentle descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your official climbing certificates. A vehicle will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for dinner and a well-deserved evening of relaxation.
