Overview (Highlights) 

The 7 Days Machame Route is one of Kilimanjaro’s most scenic and successful trekking routes. Known as the “Whiskey Route,” it offers diverse landscapes rainforest, heather ridges, moorland, alpine desert, and glaciers—while providing excellent acclimatization through the climb-high, sleep-low approach. This route is ideal for adventurous hikers seeking a rewarding challenge with beautiful scenery and a strong chance of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895m. Itineraries include professional mountain crews, quality meals, and all essential mountain equipment, ensuring a safe and memorable journey to the “Roof of Africa.

 

Day-by-Day Itinerary 

Day 0: Arrival in Moshi 

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel in Moshi for rest. In the evening, your expert mountain guide conducts a detailed pre-trek briefing and equipment check, ensuring all essential gear is ready. Any missing items can be rented at this time.

Day 1: Machame Gate → Machame Camp 

Your trek begins with a scenic drive to Machame Gate, passing through lush farmlands and the Machame village. After registration, you start ascending through the rich rainforest zone, following a gentle trail up a ridge. By late afternoon, you arrive at Machame Camp (9,350 ft), where you settle in for the night.

Day 2: Machame Camp → Shira Camp 2 

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs steeply along a rocky ridge before opening into the expansive Shira Plateau. You cross moorland terrain and beautiful river valleys before reaching Shira 2 Camp (12,500 ft), where spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro await.

Day 3: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp 

Today is a major acclimatization day. The ascent continues toward Lava Tower (15,190 ft), a dramatic 300-ft volcanic formation in the alpine desert zone. After spending time at high altitude, you descend into the Senecio Forest and arrive at Barranco Camp (13,044 ft), giving your body crucial time to adjust.

Day 4: Barranco Camp → Karanga Valley Camp 

Your morning begins with a challenging but non-technical climb up the imposing Great Barranco Wall. Once at the top, you cross several ridges and valleys, enjoying sweeping alpine desert views before descending into the Karanga Valley. A final ascent brings you to Karanga Camp (13,107 ft).

Day 5: Karanga Valley → Barafu Camp 

The trail ascends steadily through rugged alpine desert, joining the Mweka Trail Junction and continuing toward Barafu Camp (15,331 ft)—your final base before summit day. From here, you witness dramatic views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks. After an early dinner, you rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 6: Summit Day – Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp 

Your summit push begins at midnight. Trek through the icy arctic zone toward Stella Point (18,900 ft), where a breathtaking sunrise awaits. With determination, continue the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft)—Africa’s highest point. After celebrating your achievement, descend to Barafu for lunch, then continue to Mweka Camp (10,065 ft) for overnight rest.

Day 7: Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi 

Enjoy a gentle descent through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you will receive your official Kilimanjaro Summit Certificate. A vehicle then transfers you to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned shower, rest, and celebration.
